The road to Bergen is stunning, pity Bergen isn’t.

Just driving around, it’s impossible to go from one place to another without stopping several times to jump out and take a few pictures. Norway is so photogenic. Generally honestly, so,so, photogenic, I make no excuses for chucking loads of random photo’s into the blog, it’s not the kind of place you see very often.

Millions of boats

Millions of boats, note the mist in the distance…it will soon be foggy, yes …this is summer.

I had read, on another blog [Our Bumble] that LPG was hard to come by around Bergen, the fridge must never be without it and we were getting a bit low, so we made a 40km detour to Voss to get filled up before we headed west towards the former capital of Norway,

Bergen: To be honest, we were expecting a bit more out of Bergen, it was just a bit ‘dull’ and had the makings of a ‘re-made’ attraction. The “12th century” wooden buildings were in a state of constant repair, work was going on as we were there, so how they can claim an age to any of these buildings is beyond us. Most of it looked to be intentionaly ‘on the wonk’. Hordes of ‘oriental’ types (forgive the generalism, they could be from Taiwan,Tokyo or Beijing, and we Europeans [don’t know for how much longer, thanks Boris] welcome you all!)  pour out of tour coaches, fresh from the cruise ships too, into the melee of ‘history’. The ‘olde world’ fish market would look more at home in Greenwich than here in Bergen. Prices of the fish to be sold possibly puts it nearer Kensington. It’s all a bit of a con. The paint is still fresh, the ‘olde’ houses have new wood and nothing is really as old as it looks. It feels like lots of little elves (not Trolls) have been busy in the the background. So let’s move on a bit, ‘nuf-said about Bergen’, the whole of (un-painted, un-modernised) Norway is waiting for us…Sorry Bergen, you’re trying a bit too hard, I think the constant supply of cruise ships may have something to do with it. Become ‘Bergen Norway’, not Bergen U.S.A.
