Moving north, bigger Islands and Troms, Norway.

The weather up here changes so rapidly. You could be sitting out eating your tea in glorious sunshine one minuet, half an hour later, holed up indoors shouting to be heard over the pounding rain. Last night we watched the sun dip down behind the distant hills, this morning we are surrounded by thick fog. But we’ve learnt that this ‘fog’ is actually sea mist and it’s very much localised, drive for half an hour and you soon drive out of it. It does look nice spilling down from the hills into the valleys.

Pushing on North-East along the E10, the views don’t get any worse, but the knife-sharp cliff faces are slowly starting to submit into rolling hills. Continuing a theme of wild camping (aka too tight to pay) we continue to find nice little car parks next to the sea, car parks in Henningsvær and Svolvær and parking areas just off the main drag, it all goes into keeping the budget down. I also got lucky with fishing, catching my first ever fish worth eating, in a fjord, 2 very nice sized mackerel, which were served with chips of course, which also helps to keep the budget down.

Sucsess! At least 2 meals here.

If you’ve ever been into a Norwegian supermarket, you will know why we stocked to the gills in  Germany and Denmark before we came over into Norway. We were pre-warned that prices were high for most things, a loaf of bread £3, Tuborg lager, 33cl cans £1.80 per tin, that’s £5,50 per litre! Best advice to anyone doing this, pack and hoard food and drink, as much as you can cram into every available space. Of coarse eventually you will need to buy fresh stuff whilst in Norway, then you will need to cough up £3 for a small punnet of cherry tomatoes you only pay 80p for in Asda, but if you can live out of the freezer as much as possible, your wallet will thank you.
